Upliftment through education is one of the most important sectors in the social impact space, now more vital than ever, after the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Public resources and funding are at an all-time low and this means that quintile 1, 2 and 3 public schools face immense daily challenges with a lack of resources to offer even basic education in some instances.
The digital divide in South Africa further exasperated these challenges as online learning became the cornerstone to educating our youth, particularly during lockdown.
Upliftment Through Education
At Bigger Than Me we have had the privilege of working with several organisations who stand by the mantra that upliftment through education is one of the key components to a better South Africa.
Each of these institutions address a different, but equally important need in education.
Kay Mason Foundation
The Kay Mason Foundation (KMF) is a scholarship fund founded by South African born author, Richard Mason. Archbishop Desmond Tutu is a patron to the organisation.
KMF’s objective is to identify promising and talented scholars in underprivileged areas and give them access to a quality education.
Notably, KMF look beyond just academic attributes and are interested in talented, creative scholars with personal potential.
The support that scholars receive also goes beyond financial, to provide psycho-social support and life opportunities. Their recently launched Catapult program also prepares scholars for life beyond school.
Each scholar has a tailor-made development plan to ensure success and the results speak for themselves.
KMF and their alumni certainly live up the organisation’s vision to ‘build a nation of positive leaders and citizens.’
We are thrilled to have worked with KMF for the past four months helping to build their brand online and carry their story to a broader audience.

The Learning Trust
The Learning Trust’s primary upliftment through education focus is developing South Africa’s extended learning sector through the provision of funding and capacity support to After School programmes.
The After School practitioners that The Learning Trust supports are all entities that work to improve educational outcomes of young people living in poverty and exclusion.
Aside from funding and capacity support, The Learning Trust are also active in training, mentorship and coaching of these After School programmes, often creating shared platforms for collaboration among their grantees.
In 2020 The Learning Trust celebrated its 10th anniversary, a significant milestone in a particularly difficult year for education, one in which After School programmes were challenged tremendously.
Bigger Than Me developed and ran a full service campaign to tell The Learning Trust story through media (PR), social media, content creation, storytelling and more.
